Blog from Fanning Center

Finally, I have a moment to sit down and get a blog spot off to you. The past couple of days have been full and very busy. Yesterday (Thursday) started off with a very grumpy Gord and after a little chat with one of the nurses AND a nap, he came around to the more normal guy we know. We are still getting adjusted to the being in bed time and being in the wheelchair time interspersed with physio and speech therapy and meals. It really is a workout! On our walk around the facility, we found this computer station and I read the blog comments to Gord. He totally understood what I was reading him so if you have any messages to convey to Gord go ahead and write them in the comments. I will read to him. (Still don't know if he can read them himself so I will experiment). We also put on his jacket and went for a stroll through the cement garden in the front of the building. The sun was warm on his skin and he enjoyed it. After that, to kill time and stay away from his room (which was his request) we ventured to the 3rd floor where it is very quiet and peaceful. With his new chair that tilts back and has a headrest, we sat in front of the greenhouse in the sun and just dozed a little. Later that afternoon while we were in his room waiting to get back to bed, Stacy phoned from Columbia. They had a good conversation and he was only off a little on the country she was in. He asked how it was in Australia. He knows now.
In the early evening we strolled down to the main floor and sat in the cafeteria area and people watched. While there, a volunteer clown danced in playing a guitar and singing. We joined in and had a few tears of joy and sadness that were evoked from the words of the songs that related so much to us.
Every day Gord is getting stronger and stronger. It truly is a miracle! Thank you all for your prayers and moral support through this most interesting adventure.

And thank you to Ron and Diane for the wonderful evening last night and the ribs! I am going to give Gord his tonight.

I would also like to report that on Friday (today) Gord enthusiastically did his 30 minutes of physio and seemed to enjoy it. He stands easily now from the chair to the pole. He also walked down the railing quite confidently. I notice his right side is quite deficient in the eyesight and hearing but hopefully that will come back.
His right arm still is not moving at all but his right leg is. I keep telling him that if he can get his leg going and strong, the arm will come and he will be able to do so much when he can walk. The aphasia is still happening and so is the frustration of me not understanding. I am really trying hard to zero on the subject he is trying to express but it will take me some time I'm afraid. I never was good at charades......

So it makes me feel good to be able to relay good news to you all.....

Have a wonderful day - again.

Much love
Sheila

  3. Hi Gord & Sheila!

You were such a big part of our daily work lives at Spartan Gord, and though we no longer share that connection, we want to let you know that we have been none the less deeply concerned and have held you close in our thoughts and daily prayers, and we're thrilled to read of your terrific and speedy progress!

Sheila, you have been such a brave and strong advocate for Gord's well being - we know that you have to 'drive the bus' in this healthcare system - your devotion is inspiring.

All the best to you both in the coming times of hard work; may your patience, stamina & determination sustain you. You continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

  4. Hi Gord and Sheila,

How very thoughtful of you Gord to remain on 16th Avenue, right where I live. We had a ride to the airport with Ken and Sue in your nice new grey truck in Maui and must say it is many steps above Dale's old favorite grey truck at Sylvan Lake.

Happy to hear that you Gord are making such progress, you always were one to finish whatever you started, and you have certainly started down the road of amazing accomplishments.
We will be coming to visit you on Wednesday night, Feb 25, our flight comes in at 5:30 p.m. Maybe save some of your dessert for Norm? If he could find his thermocoupler he would bring it with him. Sheila I am sure this new schedule is very stressful but it also will give you some time away to renew your self mentally and physically each day.
Sheila remember you and I have a dinner date but don't tell my tennis opponent as I know he's very jealous and it will upset him almost as much as the current price of oil.
We're both so happy he's now at Fanning and in their re-hab program. We're confident it will enhance his recovery in every way.

Love to you both, and see you soon.
    Norm and Dale

  5. Richard and I played cribbage with Gord this afternoon - Gord didn't miss a beat and counted all his own points! Rich pegged for him but Gord knows all the cards and stuck it out until the game was completely done! Both Bosches beat me - I'll get a rematch tomorrow!

A musical family was having dinner in the Dining Room tonite while Sheila & Gord and Richard & I had a double date for dinner! Gord really enjoyed the music - they played the guitar and sang in Spanish and it was great entertainment - clapping was a little challenging for Gord and I think that is the first time he has tried to clap - he is going to have to get creative!

We are marvelled at all the good friends Gord and Sheila have - the list just goes on and on - it is so wonderful for them to have all the support of such a great bunch like all of you that read this blog - Sheila has been reading the comments to Gord when they go to the computer room so he's hearing all support that is pouring out all of you!

    Keep it up!
